SPC to offer License to Carry class on Nov. 4

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on Saturday (Nov. 4) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus. The class will begin at 8 a.m. with breaks every hour as well as a one-hour lunch break.

The classroom portion covers firearm safety, the use of force, non-violent conflict resolution, lawful concealed or open carry, storage with children in the home, and contacts with law enforcement personnel. It also covers holsters for concealed and open carry, and runs about six hours.

The range portion covers range safety rules and commands, and the shooting portion of the class at distances ranging from three to 15 yards, using the indoor pistol range in the Law Enforcement building. The number of students will determine how long the range portion requires.  Inexperienced shooters might want to take a NRA Basic Pistol course before taking the LTC course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol, any caliber, and 50 rounds of ammunition to match. Eye and hearing protection are provided for students who do not have their own.

The instructor is Dr. Mike Felker, a retired SPC professor, NRA Advanced Pistol Instructor, D.P.S. certified LTC Instructor, and U.S. Concealed Carry Association Affiliate Instructor.

The cost of the course is $75 for students getting their first license, and $25 for students wanting a refresher course before renewing their license. This does not include the fee for the DPS and FBI fingerprint and background checks (reduced from $140 to $40 on Sept. 1). Renewals now are handled strictly online, the changes in Texas firearms law since 2013 make a refresher course a good investment.

Students need to register and pay in advance. Space is limited. To sign up, call Kasey Reyes at (806) 716-2341 or email mfelker@southplainscollege.edu  or kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.

South Plains College will host Arrive Alive Tour on Nov. 6

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will host the Arrive Alive Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 6) in front of the Student Services Building.

Sponsored by UNITE, the Arrive Alive Tour program uses a high-tech simulator, impact video and a number of other resources to educate the public about the dangers of intoxicated driving. The simulator allows participants to experience the potential consequences of impaired driving in a controlled environment.

Nearly one-third of all traffic deaths involve alcohol-impaired drivers. Every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. On average, two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime. In 2014, the highest percentage of drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes were between the ages of 21 to 24. Every day, people drive drunk more than 300,000 times. However, only about 3,200 of those people are arrested.

UNITE brings health and wellness programs to high schools, colleges and communities across the nation. Its programs are designed to heighten awareness to the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. These events have a powerful impact on students to reinforce the subjects that schools and parents teach them daily.Arrive Alive

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the new NRA Defensive Pistol course Nov. 11 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus. The class begins at 9 a.m. and includes breaks every hour as well as a one-hour break for lunch.

Space is limited, and students should pay in advance. The course runs eight to 10 hours, depending on the number and skill level of the students, and costs $90. Students will need a pistol, strong-side holster, two extra magazines or speed loaders, and 150 rounds of ammunition.

Participants will need a cover garment because all shots are fired after drawing the pistol from a concealed holster. Ear and eye protection is provided for students who do not have their own.

The goal of the course is to prepare students to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly and with confidence. The course assumes that students have or plan to get a Concealed Handgun License. Students should have completed an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting, Basic Personal Protection in the Home or License To Carry course to be eligible. This is not a course to teach beginners how to shoot a pistol.

Lesson modules include firearm safety and responsible, ethical use of the firearm; basic principles of concealment; presenting the pistol and re-holstering; mental awareness; techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations; the psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack; flash sight picture; the use of cover and concealment; reloading under stress; immediate action drills; moving off the line of attack; as well as the pros and cons of pocket pistols for concealed carry.

The range portion will include at least 70 shots on targets at varying distances, and students must pass a final qualification course which includes reloads and immediate action drills. The course is completely objective based; students will pass or fail depending on how well they have learned what is being taught, not on the basis of a written test.

To register for the class, call Kasey Reyes at 806.716.2341 or email her at kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.

unnamed (15)SPC to offer License to Carry class in early October

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on  Oct. 7 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus.

The range portion covers range safety rules and commands, and the shooting portion of the class at distances ranging from three to fifteen yards, using the indoor pistol range in the Law Enforcement building. The number of students will determine how long the range portion requires. Inexperienced shooters might want to take an Introduction to Handguns course before taking the L.T.C. course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol, any caliber, and fifty rounds of ammunition to match. Eye and hearing protection are provided for students who do not have their own.

The instructor is Dr. Mike Felker, a retired SPC professor, NRA Advanced Pistol Instructor, D.P.S. certified LTC Instructor and U.S. Concealed Carry Association Affiliate Instructor.

The cost of the course is $75 for students getting their first license, and $25 for students wanting a refresher course before renewing their license; this does not include the fee for the D.P.S. and F.B.I. fingerprint and background checks (reduced from $140 to $40 on Sept. 1).  Although renewals are now handled strictly online, the changes in Texas firearms law since 2013 make a refresher course a good investment.

Students need to register and pay in advance. Space is limited. To sign up, call Kasey Reyes at (806) 716-2341 or email mfelker@southplainscollege.edu, or kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.

October 14-15 – NRA Basic Pistol – Sat 9-5, Sun 1-5

South Plains College to offer NRA Basic Pistol course

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer an NRA Basic Pistol class on Saturday (Oct. 14) and Oct. 15 (Sunday) in Room 116 of the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday with an hour break for lunch, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 (Sunday).

The cost of the course is $85, and students need to register and pay in advance. Because of the range requirements, space is limited to 15 students.

This is an excellent course for new pistol shooters or those who need more training and self-confidence before applying for a Texas License To Carry a Handgun. Participants must be law-abiding citizens who may lawfully possess a handgun, and children are welcome with a parent (contact the instructor at steven@freedomshooting.com for more information).

The Basic Pistol takes approximately 10 to 12 hours, depending on the number of students. It covers firearm safety, how ammunition and handguns work, different types of handguns, handgun terminology, cleaning handguns, proper shooting skills, purchasing a new or used handgun and available shooting opportunities. Students will learn proper marksmanship fundamentals as well as how to shoot from bench rest, two-hand standing and one-hand standing positions.

Pistols, ammunition, hearing and eye protection are provided, although students are free to bring their own pistols to practice. Students who wish to fire a variety of pistols ranging from .380 to .44 magnum may do so for an extra $10 payable at the range to cover ammunition costs.

To sign up, call Kasey Reyes, administrative assistant to the Dean of Continuing and Distance Education, at (806) 716-2341 or email kreyes@southplainscollege.edu .

SPC to offer Personal Protection Outside the Home course on Oct. 21-22

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home course in the Law Enforcement Technology building on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 (Saturday and Sunday). This course is intended for individuals who have a License To Carry or plan to get one.

The course focuses on firearm skills needed to win in a violent encounter, and it is not a course for beginners. Experienced students from age 12 and up may register.  N.R.A. instructors must take the student course before taking the instructor course.

The course is divided into two levels: basic and advanced. The nine-hour basic level covers safety, mindset, avoiding confrontations, legal aspects and concealed carry. The range portion teaches students to present the pistol from concealment, and all shooting will begin with the gun holstered and concealed. Students learn to move to concealment or cover, fire with one hand, move forward and backward as well as aim by point shooting. Students who complete this level successfully also may take the advanced portion which is another five hours at the range covering more advanced shooting skills. The range portion requires approximately 200 rounds of ammunition, and it is included in the price.

Class will begin Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. On Oct. 22, the class will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. There will be frequent breaks, and an hour-long lunch break for both days. The instructors are Steven and Audra Dyer, N.R.A., Texas Parks and Wildlife and Freedom Shooting Academy instructors.

The cost is $135, and students also must furnish their own handgun, 200 or more rounds of ammunition, either a strong-side holster that covers the trigger guard or a holster purse. They will need a jacket or vest as a concealment garment.

Students need to register and pay in advance. Because of the nature of the range portions, enrollment is very limited. To register, call Kasey Reyes at 806-716-2341, or email kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.

SPC to offer License to Carry class on Sept. 1

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on Sept. 2 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus.

Inexperienced shooters might want to take an Introduction to Handguns course before taking the L.T.C. course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol, any caliber and 50 rounds of ammunition to match.

The fee does not include the payment for the D.P.S. and F.B.I. fingerprint and background checks (reduced from $140 to $40 on Sept. 1).

Although renewals are now handled strictly online, the changes in Texas firearms law since 2013 make a refresher course a good investment. Students need to register and pay in advance. Space is limited.

To sign up, call Kasey Reyes at (806) 716-2341 or email kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.

SPC to offer License to Carry class on Sept. 1

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on Sept. 2 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus.

Inexperienced shooters might want to take an Introduction to Handguns course before taking the L.T.C. course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol, any caliber and 50 rounds of ammunition to match.
