South Plains College to host Madrigal Dinner Dec. 1-2

LEVELLAND – South Plains College’s Fine Arts and Theatre departments will host its third traditional Madrigal Dinner at 6:30 p.m. from Dec. 1-2 (Friday and Saturday) in the Sundown Room. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with the service and show beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The cost of tickets is $25 each or $200 for a table for eight. Tickets are sold only in advance and may be purchased by calling (806) 716-2408 or (806) 716-2409 or by visiting the Business Office on the Levelland campus.

The Madrigal Dinner is a theatre where medieval costumes and pageantry meet the beginning of the Christmas season. It is set in the Middle Ages and is generally comedic in nature. The meal is divided into courses, each of which is heralded with a traditional song. A play is performed between the courses and a concert of choral music concludes the festivities.

The menu will include spring greens salad, a Soup Course, a Wassail cup, dinner with a choice of Smoked Pork Loin or Marsala Chicken, Potatoes, a Malibu blend of steamed vegetables, Green Bean Almondine and cake. The menu is subject to change.

For more information, contact Dr. Daniel Nazworth, chairperson for the Fine Arts Department and professor of Theatre Arts, at (806) 716-2260.

SPC to offer License to Carry class on Dec. 2

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on Dec. 2 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus. The class will begin at 8 a.m. with breaks every hour as well as a one-hour lunch break.

The classroom portion covers firearm safety, the use of force, non-violent conflict resolution, lawful concealed or open carry, storage with children in the home, and contacts with law enforcement personnel. It also covers holsters for concealed and open carry, and runs about six hours.

The range portion covers range safety rules and commands, and the shooting portion of the class at distances ranging from three to 15 yards, using the indoor pistol range in the Law Enforcement building. The number of students will determine how long the range portion requires.  Inexperienced shooters might want to take a NRA Basic Pistol course before taking the LTC course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol, any caliber, and 50 rounds of ammunition to match. Eye and hearing protection are provided for students who do not have their own.

The instructor is Dr. Mike Felker, a retired SPC professor, NRA Advanced Pistol Instructor, DPS certified LTC Instructor and U.S. Concealed Carry Association Affiliate Instructor.

The cost of the course is $75 for students getting their first license, and $25 for students wanting a refresher course before renewing their license; this does not include the fee for the DPS and FBI fingerprint and background checks (reduced from $140 to $40 on Sept. 1).

Although renewals are now handled strictly online, the changes in Texas firearms law since 2013 make a refresher course a good investment.

Students need to register and pay in advance. Space is limited. To sign up, call Kasey Reyes at (806) 716-2341or email kreyes@southplainscollege.edu or mfelker@southplainscollege.edu.

South Plains College to offer Church Safety Class on Dec. 16

LEVELLAND – South Plains College, in conjunction with South Plains Firearm Instruction, will offer a Church Safety and Security class on Dec. 16 (Saturday) in Room 115 of the Law Enforcement Technology building. The class will begin at 9 a.m., with breaks every hour and a one-hour break for lunch.

This is a six-to-eight-hour class for church staff or concerned members who want to develop a safety/ security plan for their church. Students will learn how to conduct a Risk Assessment and Facility Check, form a Church Safety Team, evaluate Church Vulnerability and develop an Outreach Plan. The course includes Biblical references to support such planning

A brief overview will cover the recent rise in church shootings as well as the times when attacks were stopped. The main causes of church shootings also will be covered.

The class will focus on specific safety issues like fire extinguishers, fire exits and smoke alarms as well as security issues like doors and windows, alarm systems and surveillance systems. This is not a firearms class, but training options will be discussed for those churches which plan to allow Texas License To Carry holders to be armed in church. Legal issues will be included, as well as changes in Texas law in 2017.

The course is offered as a public service, but there is a $50 per student charge to cover expenses like handouts, checklists, etc.
