Quanah Parker Descendants Visit Levelland to Bless Historic Arrow Marker

Ron and Don Parker, great-grandsons of Quanah Parker, legendary Quahada Comanche chief, will be in Levelland to bless the Quanah Parker Trail Arrow at Lobo Park.

The ceremony, hosted by Hockley County Historical Commission, will take place at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, August 26 at Lobo Park. Anyone interested is invited to attend this special blessing.  The two men wearing traditional ceremonial dress, will burn cedar needles in an abalone shell and using an eagle feather fan, will waft the aromatic smoke toward the arrow and all participants. Don will sing a song for Quanah accompanied by his traditional ceremonial drum.

These descendants of Quanah Parker have only been to a few of the sites of the Quanah Parker Trail Arrows to bless them. It is an honor to have them visit Levelland to hold this ceremony.

SPC to offer License to Carry class on Aug. 27

LEVELLAND – South Plains College will offer the new Texas License to Carry a Handgun class on Aug. 27 (Saturday) in the Law Enforcement Technology building on the Levelland campus. The class will begin at 8 a.m. with breaks every hour as well as a lunch break.

The cost of the course is $75 for students getting their first license, and $25 for students wanting a refresher course before renewing their license. Although renewals now are handled strictly online, the changes in Texas firearms law in 2013 and 2015 make a refresher course a good investment. Students need to register and pay in advance. Space is limited.

The classroom portion covers firearm safety, the use of force, non-violent conflict resolution, lawfully concealed or open carry, storage with children in the home and contacts with law enforcement personnel. It runs about six hours.

The range portion covers range safety rules and commands, and the shooting portion of the class at distances ranging from three to 15 yards. The number of students will determine how long the range portion requires. Inexperienced shooters might want to take the N.R.A. Basic Pistol course before taking the L.T.C. course.

Students will need to bring either a revolver or semiautomatic pistol of at least .32 caliber and 50 rounds of ammunition to match. Eye and hearing protection are provided for students who do not have their own.

To sign up, call Kasey Reyes at (806) 716-2341 or email kreyes@southplainscollege.edu.
